Troubleshooting Video Playback Lag & Sync Issues in Edit Suites

Overview

Occasional latency or "sync drift" (usually 1–3 frames) in the edit suites can occur during high-bandwidth playback or when working with uncompressed 4K/8K sequences. This guide outlines the immediate steps to resolve playback lag before escalating to the Engineering team.

Common Causes

  1. Buffer Overflow: Too many background renders or high-resolution sequences open simultaneously.

  2. I/O Hardware Desync: The Blackmagic/AJA hardware interface needs a reset.

  3. Project Location: Assets accidentally being played off a local drive rather than the PixitMedia/Nexis shared storage.

Step-by-Step Resolution

  • Restart the I/O Service: Navigate to the Desktop "Support Tools" folder and run Reset_Video_IO.bat. This power-cycles the external monitor feed without closing your project.

  • Check Refresh Rates: Ensure the monitor refresh rate matches your project frame rate (e.g., 25fps for UK Broadcast vs 23.98fps for Film).

  • Clear Media Cache: In your NLE (Avid/Premiere), go to Preferences > Media Cache and select "Delete Unused."

  • Server Connection: Verify you are connected via the 10GbE port. If you are on the standard office Wi-Fi/Ethernet, playback will lag.
